There are many interventions designed to improve facial appearance non-surgically. These may include injections of neuromodulators such as Botox®, “fillers” for volume augmentation, chemical peels, and lasers. Gallatin Plastic Surgery has a wide range of nonsurgical treatments available to complement our surgical expertise.
Neuromodulators act by weakening muscle. This has a variety of effects depending on the muscle targeted, such as improving wrinkles, decreasing migraine occurrence, and improving excess sweating. Click this banner for more information.
The first commercially available neuromodulator is onabotulinum toxin, or Botox®. Nearly all of the other toxins produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria have been produced for commercial use since that time. These neuromodulators vary in duration of action, amount of discomfort with injection, and amount of diffusion, or spread.
Although these toxins technically cause irreversible nerve damage, preventing muscle movement and therefore decreasing wrinkles from these muscles, the body creates a “workaround” by growing new nerve endings, usually over the course of about 3 months. The more consistently a patient is treated, the longer the effect lasts.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs in the skin. Fillers based on this material are used to improve facial volume and diminish wrinkles. Depending on the consistency of the filler (called the G’), the filler may last a shorter or longer amount of time, but may need to be injected at a deeper level to avoind firm or irregular appearance.
Most hyaluronic acid injectables are branded under the Juvederm® or Restylane® labels, which are families of fillers with different attributes.
