Frequently Asked Questions
How does a mastopexy work?
During your procedure, extra skin is removed while the nipple is kept attached to the underlying tissue and rotated into the appropriate position. A small amount of tissue is removed to allow reshaping of the breast and repositioning of the nipple and then the incisions are closed. Drains are not usually used for a mastopexy. Dissolving sutures are used, and Dermabond covers the incisions to make these waterproof. Dr. McDaniel uses a form of breast lift that maximizes the long-term appearance of the breast by supporting the breast shape using your own breast tissue rather than skin alone.
Will my breast size decrease after a breast lift?
In a mastopexy, a small amount of breast tissue is removed in order to improve shape. A new bra may be smaller-sized than an old, poorly-fitting bra, but your breast size will not be significantly smaller.
Can other procedures be combined with a breast lift?
Yes! A breast lift is often combined with liposuction, an abdominoplasty (for a "mommy makeover"). Liposuction is another frequently combined procedure. Under certain circumstances, a mastopexy can also be combined with a breast augmentation (see Breast Lift with Implants). At your complimentary consultation, Dr. McDaniel will listen to your goals and help you understand all of your options.
A breast lift is a great operation because of the improvement in breast shape and restoration of self-confidence that can be obtained.Dr. Jarred McDaniel
What will my recovery be like?
Dr. McDaniel will perform your surgery in our AAAASF-certified operating facility. This designation demonstrates the highest standard of safety and quality, and we have the only private facility in Southwest Montana. No overnight hospital stay is required for this outpatient operation. Dr. McDaniel will see you the next day, in 2 weeks, 2 months, 6 months, and a year after surgery to ensure proper healing. None of these visits or any others will be charged.
You will be discharged after surgery with a garment bra , which will be switched the following day for two supportive bras, which will support your healing for the next eight weeks.
The majority of patients are back to work within a week. You will have a restriction on cardiovascular exercise for 3 weeks (walking is encouraged!) and an upper body activity restriction of 6 weeks.
How much discomfort will I be in after my procedure?
Surgical discomfort after mastopexy is generally moderate. Dr. McDaniel uses an injection (Exparel) that significantly reduces discomfort for up to three days after surgery. You will be prescribed pain medication as well, which is typically used for one week after surgery, after which time you will be transitioned to over-the-counter analgesics.
Keep in mind that your level of discomfort is closely related to the frequency and intensity of postoperative activity, and maintaining activity restrictions is important in recovering quickly.
Before & After Gallery
Imagining how you will look after surgery can be difficult. To help here are some photos of real patients before and after the procedure. These patients have given written permission for photos to be used.
What scarring can I expect?
In most cases, mastopexy scars include a scar around the areola and from the lower part of the areola vertically to the fold under the breast (a "lollipop" shape).
Patients seeking this operation are often concerned about breast lift scars. However, these scars tend to "mature" well into scars that are not casually noticeable, and the majority of patients are satisfied with the trade-off of scars for improved appearance. Scars generally take a year to flatten and fade to their best appearance.
How much does breast lift cost? Are there financing options?
We make every effort to keep costs low, which is greatly facilitated by controlling anesthesia and facility fees by having our own, private AAAASF-certified operating facility. A breast lift costs between $7,000 and $8,000. This is a total cost that includes fees for your surgeon, anesthesia, and the facility. A multi-procedure discount is also available.
Gallatin Plastic Surgery offers a variety of financing plans through Care Credit. You can apply online or at our office, we are happy to answer any questions that you might have.
