“How do I prepare for my plastic surgery consultation?” is a question we encourage all of our patients to ask. Alexander Graham Bell once said, “Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.” Preparing for surgery is no different, and your consultation is the first step in that process. Since we tend to get more out of the experiences we are prepared for, it is a good idea to take some time to think through what you want to get out of your first visit with Dr. Jarred McDaniel. Consider your goals for surgery, your anxieties, and your questions. You will not be rushed through your conversation, so coming prepared will ensure you get the maximum benefit from the experience.
Here are some questions to consider as you plan for your consultation:
- What part or parts of your body would you like to change?
- Why is this change significant to you?
- Is there a part of your face or body that people comment on frequently?
- Do you have any symptoms—discomfort or impairment—related to the features you would like to change?
- Do you have any anxieties related to surgery?
- What questions do you have about anesthesia?
- What would you like to know about your recovery?
Some patients prefer to make their own list of concerns to discuss. This can help to ensure that all of your questions are answered. Remember, no question is a silly question!
In addition to questions, patients are welcome to bring in pictures to better identify what they are interested in. While this can help to facilitate the discussion, it is important to remember when looking at pictures that factors such as age and body type play a role in the final results. Dr. McDaniel will gladly discuss both the picture and the procedure(s) in question, as well as what results can be reasonably expected.
More importantly, Dr. McDaniel will help you understand all of your options. Although you might have one procedure in mind, you may find that a completely different procedure will better achieve your goals. Providing honest, quality care is our priority, and we will only recommend a treatment plan that is in your best interests.
Your consultation is complimentary, and you will not be pressured to schedule a procedure. Our goal for your first visit is that you feel comfortable asking all of your questions, and that you leave our office prepared to make a decision that is best for you.
